The Fire at Our Complex and An Interpretation of "Set Fire to the Rain"

I was working at my computer a few days before we left for our vacation when all of a sudden, there was a FLASH! the house shook and the electricity shut down. It was incredibly dark for that time of the afternoon from the storm. I had just lit the third candle when B. Bear caught my attention and said someone was ringing the doorbell.

When I got to the bottom of the stairs, our maintenance man, Kevin and a Fireman were at the door. "Get out now! The roof is on fire!"

Our neighbor across the way invited us over to her porch while we watched the firemen at work. Lightening had struck and blasted a hole in the roof and started a fire in a vacant apartment on the third level. We watched as they brought the ladder in, then they proceeded to chainsaw an opening in the roof on the other side to get the hoses in. Fortunately, the apartments were vacant, and the lower one didn't have fire damage, but the tenant had to move due to water damage.

Everyone was ok.  I'm certain the insurance will take good care of the property. Kevin told us the firewall in our units did exactly what they were supposed to do, so damage was minimal and the fire didn't spread. The fire department arrived here quickly, and everyone is thankful to the person who called when they saw the smoke.

I found out that had B. Bear not been home to tell me that someone was at the door, the Fire Department has a key that opens a lock box near our door that has a spare key to the apartment just for cases like this. That's good to know. Even if Kevin hadn't been there, the fireman knew I was deaf by the small note on our door for delivery people to set packages at the door because I can't hear the doorbell. .

I posted a few photos of the event below.

Be sure to check out the beautiful interpretation of "Set Fire to the Rain" by Jeremy Neiderer at the bottom of this post.

The firemen were on this ladder during the lightening storm. I'm so glad they didn't get struck!

Lyrics to the song are below the video.

"Set Fire To The Rain"

I let it fall, my heart,
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me

My hands, they're strong
But my knees were far too weak,
To stand in your arms
Without falling to your feet

But there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew.
All the things you'd say
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.

[Chorus:]
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

When I lay with you
I could stay there
Close my eyes
Feel you here forever
You and me together
Nothing is better

'Cause there's a side to you
That I never knew, never knew,
All the things you'd say,
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.

[Chorus:]
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!

I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
Where it felt something die
'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!

Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That heart you caught must be waiting for you
Even now when we're already over
I can't help myself from looking for you.

[Chorus:]
I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your face,
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name

I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
Where it felt something die
'Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time, ohhhh!

Oh noooo
Let it burn, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn
