Raised on the Southern Oregon Coast, now retired on the Southern Oregon Coast. I was a hard of hearing child who grew up to be a deafened adult. I share and write about deafness, hearing loss and other things I find interesting. I am a 50 something year old woman who could be anyone's mother, grandmother or friend. I've traveled the U.S., and I've lived in Europe. I'm currently residing near the beach with Fabulous Husband and 11 year old son. ~ Joyce Edmiston
I wish everyone with small kids would watch this video. Children that can communicate their wants and needs have fewer tantrums. It bugs me when people say that sign language will delay a child's speech. Not being able to communicate with others can be very aggravating.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Neil!
DeleteI think there is some truth in it, and not only children, but adults who acquire deafness too, it can be so easy to slip into non-speech mode while using sign, I have to consciously fight that tendency every day. The 'trick' is to start speaking and always then to maintain that even when signing.
